Star Wars Zero Company Action Points & Turn Economy

Master the 3-AP system in Star Wars Zero Company: action point costs, interleaving squad turns, AP refund loops, and avoiding common action traps.

Combat in Star Wars Zero Company is governed by a 3-Action Point (3 AP) economy per character per turn. Unlike traditional turn-based games where moving ends a unit's turn or attacks consume all remaining momentum, Zero Company allows complete modularity in how you spend each point.

Mastering the AP economy means understanding action costs, coordinating turn interleaving, and chaining abilities that refund or grant extra AP.

Universal action point costs

Tactical AP Interface Breakdown: Operators have a modular 3-AP pool (shown in the left tactical HUD). The action bar displays discrete AP investments: [Move] (1 AP), [Shoot] (2 AP for heavy rifle fire), [Overwatch] (1 AP), and [Grenade] (2 AP). Turns can be freely interleaved across squad members before passing initiative.

Every tactical move has a defined AP cost. Knowing these values before committing allows you to calculate exact turn outcomes without stranding an Operator in no-man's-land.

Action CategoryAP CostTactical FunctionKey Considerations
Standard Move (Blue)1 APReposition within base mobility rangeRetains 2 AP for shooting, abilities, or taking cover
Dash / Sprint (Yellow)2 APExtended repositioning to distant coverConsumes movement budget; leaves only 1 AP for basic attack
Blaster Pistol / Rifle Shot1 APStandard ranged attackCan be performed twice if stationary (1 AP + 1 AP + 1 AP utility)
Heavy Weapon / Sniper Shot2 APHigh-damage, armor-piercing, or long-range blastHigh AP investment; usually requires a stationary setup turn
Force Push / Force Pull1 APReposition target, break cover, cause impactTel-Rea control staple; preserves AP for follow-up
Combat Utility (Stim/Grenade)1 APArea denial, debuff cure, or immediate healingLimited charges per encounter; cannot be spammed
Overwatch Stance1-2 APReactive area fire during enemy phaseAccuracy penalty applies; easily countered by enemy smoke/suppression

The art of interleaving actions

The biggest mistake new commanders make is treating turns as sequential character activations: activating Hawks, spending all 3 AP, then activating Trick and spending all 3 AP.

Zero Company gives you free squad switching:

[Operator 1: Scout] -> 1 AP Move to reveal flank angle
       ↓
[Operator 2: Heavy] -> 2 AP Suppressive Fire to strip target cover
       ↓
[Operator 3: Sniper]-> 2 AP Precision Shot on the exposed target (Kill)
       ↓
[Operator 1: Scout] -> 2 AP Attack + Dash back to Full Cover

By interleaving actions:

  1. You never commit an attack until the target's cover has been compromised by an ally.
  2. Low-health enemies can be softened up before triggering kill-streak perks.
  3. Operators caught in bad terrain can be rescued by an ally's utility before finishing their movement.

AP generation and refund loops

Certain authored Operators and specialized skill trees feature mechanics that generate or refund AP during combat, creating devastating "Alpha Strike" turns:

  • Kabb's Kill-Refund Loop: Kabb's signature close-quarters abilities (such as Uppercut) can refund 1 AP upon securing an elimination, enabling him to cross the battlefield, strike down a weakened droid, and immediately reposition into cover.
  • Astromech Droid Battery (M-3VO): Specialized utility droids carry the ability to transfer charge, sacrificing their own AP to grant an additional action to your primary damage dealer.
  • Advantage Burst Actions: Consuming squad Advantage bypasses standard AP limits, allowing high-tier tactical commands outside the normal 3-point budget.

Three AP traps to avoid

  1. The 3-AP Sprint Trap: Spending all 3 AP purely on double-moving across open terrain leaves an Operator with zero defense and zero reaction capability. If unexpected reinforcements spawn, that Operator is almost guaranteed an extended stay in the Medbay.
  2. Stationary Over-Shooting: Firing three 1-AP blaster shots from half cover against an enemy behind full cover yields minimal damage. It is almost always better to spend 1 AP maneuvering for a flank than taking two low-percentage shots.
  3. Overwatch Obsession: Leaving 2 AP in Overwatch against enemies that possess grenades or smoke bombs wastes potential proactive damage. Overwatch in Zero Company is best used as a defensive perimeter against melee beasts, not as a primary kill mechanic.

Patch 1.1 balance note

In Patch 1.1, Bit Reactor resolved an issue where certain Secondary Specialization talents incorrectly consumed 2 AP instead of 1 AP on secondary utility deployments. Always inspect the active AP badge beside the skill icon before executing.
