In Star Wars Zero Company, taking severe battlefield damage does not simply reset when a mission concludes. Operatoren who drop to zero health or sustain critical damage return to The Den bearing persistent Injuries. Left unmanaged, an injury cascade will drain your bench, force compromised units into combat, and end your campaign on higher difficulties.

Injury severity levels and combat penalties

When an Operator is incapacitated and revived, or sustains heavy health damage exceeding their shielding, they receive an injury classification based on remaining vitality:

Injury TierCauseCampaign PenaltyBase Healing Time (Cycles)Medbay Upgraded (Tier 2/3)
Light WoundDropped below 30% HP without incapacitation-10% Maximum HP; -1 movement tile1 to 2 Cycles1 Cycle
Severe InjuryDowned and stabilized by a Medic/Stim-25% Maximum HP; -10% Base Aim; Cannot equip heavy ordnance3 to 4 Cycles2 Cycles
Critical TraumaDowned and left unstable for multiple combat turns-40% Maximum HP; -1 AP per turn if deployed while recovering5+ Cycles3 Cycles

Star Wars Zero Company Medbay Recovery Cycles and Squad Reserve Management

Base Management Breakdown: Operatives recovering inside The Den's medical pods. Notice the severity meters and recovery timers (Cycles). Maintaining an active Squad Reserve Roster prevents critical combat shortages while frontline veterans convalesce.

Deploying injured units: the risk vs. reward

The game allows you to deploy recovering Operatoren if an urgent Operation or story mission is about to expire. However, deploying a wounded unit is a perilous gamble:

  1. Compounded Vulnerability: A wounded Operator has diminished health pools, making them susceptible to being one-shot by enemy snipers or heavy concussion grenades.
  2. Re-Injury Extension: If an already injured Operator is downed again, their recovery timer resets and extends into a Critical Trauma state.
  3. AP Deprivation: Units deployed under Critical Trauma suffer a 1-AP penalty on their first combat turn, severely restricting opening deployment options.

Upgrading The Den's Medbay

Investing resources into base development at The Den directly alleviates the pressure of squad downtime:

  • Medbay Tier 1 (Default): Standard recovery rate; handles up to 2 recovering Operatoren simultaneously without overflow penalties.
  • Medbay Tier 2 (Bacta Tanks): Reduces recovery cycle durations by 25% across all injury tiers and unlocks an additional medical bed.
  • Medbay Tier 3 (Advanced Cybernetics): Cuts baseline healing cycles by 50%, eliminates the movement penalty on returning units, and supports full-squad convalescence.

See The Den Upgrades Guide for build priority recommendations and resource allocation tradeoffs.

Roster rotation: the true counter to injuries

Relying exclusively on a single four-person "dream team" (e.g., Hawks, Trick, Tel-Rea, and a single specialist) is an unsustainable strategy. To maintain campaign momentum:

  1. Recruit Early at The Den: Hire custom Operatoren to mirror your core roles (Scout, Medic, Soldier, Heavy).
  2. Rotate on Low-Threat Operations: Deploy secondary recruits on secondary intel missions to earn experience and skill points while your primary starters recover in the Medbay.
  3. Cross-Train Resilience: Select endurance talents such as Grit or Anticipation on frontline operatives to increase bleed-out timers and minimize severe injury roll rates.

Beskar Mode and Permadeath boundaries

On standard difficulties (Story, Normal, Tactical), incapacitated units survive post-mission extraction. However, in Beskar Mode:

  • An unstabilized Operator who bleeds out is lost permanently. Their authored storylines, unique bonds, and custom progression are terminated.
  • Always pack extra Stims on support units or designate an emergency evac route before engaging elite Infinite Coil commanders.

Patch 1.1 medical fixes

Patch 1.1 resolved a glitch where Medbay cycle counters failed to decrement after completing non-combat Intel Operations. Recovery now advances reliably across all campaign mission types.
